Lack of association between the presence of the pVir plasmid and bloody diarrhea in Campylobacter jejuni enteritis.

The main mechanisms by which Campylobacter jejuni causes diarrhea are unknown. In contrast to a recent communication, we report here the absence of an association with the plasmid pVir in patients infected with C. jejuni who developed bloody diarrhea in The Netherlands, and we suggest a role for other virulence determinants.

Evaluation of the positive predictive value of a rapid Immunochromatographic test to detect Campylobacter in stools

The recently developed rapid immunochromatographic tests (ICT) have the potential to provide a quick and easy diagnosis of Campylobacter enteritis in comparison to culture. In a previous study we found them sensitive but lacking in specificity. The aim of the present study was to focus on the problem of specificity and determine the positive predictive value (PPV) of a positive result of the Im...

pVir and Bloody Diarrhea in Campylobacter jejuni Enteritis

The plasmid pVir may play a role in the virulence of Campylobacter jejuni, a leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis. The pVir plasmid was identified in 17% of 104 C. jejuni clinical isolates studied and was significantly associated with the occurrence of blood in patient stool, a marker of invasive infection. The pVir plasmid was not associated with greater occurrence of diarrhea, fever, pa...

Early treatment of Campylobacter jejuni enteritis.

The bacteriologic and clinical effects of early antibiotic treatment of Campylobacter jejuni enteritis were studied. Erythromycin rapidly eliminated C. jejuni from stools, whereas trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole did not. Despite its bacteriologic effectiveness, erythromycin did not reduce the duration or severity of diarrhea, abdominal pain, or other symptoms.

Reiter's syndrome in association with enteritis due to Campylobacter fetus ssp. jejuni.

An 18-year-old girl with Reiter's syndrome after febrile diarrhoea was found to be infected with Campylobacter fetus spp. jejuni. Excretion of campylobacter into stools was stopped by erythromycin therapy, but active polyarthritis lasted for 6 months. The patient was positive for HLA B27.
